Mátra Mountains
If you drive from Budapest to the campsite in Gelej via the M3, you will see the Mátra Mountains appear on your left. This mountain range contains the highest peaks in Hungary: Kékes (1,014m) and Galya-tető (964m). You can recognize the highest point by the television tower built on top of the mountain. If you drive just over an hour from the campsite, you will reach the highest point of Hungary, Kékes, where a beautiful view awaits you.
The Mátra Mountains are part of the Inner Western Carpathians and form the connection between the Cserhát Hills and the Bükk Mountains. This area is excellent for cycling and hiking, with various marked routes available. The trails are well signposted and vary in difficulty level.
Cycling is possible on both paved and unpaved routes. There are many unpaved roads winding through the mountains and valleys.
During the activity, you can enjoy the beautiful flora and fauna that the mountains have to offer, including the rare fire salamander.
In the Mátra Mountains, you can also go skiing in winter on the ski slopes near Kékes-tető.
The highest point of Hungary, Kékes, is also accessible by car.
