Eger

Eger is a historical city that is not well known to most holidaymakers. The city is located in the valley between the Mátra Mountains and the Bükk Mountains. In Eger, you'll find a castle, thermal baths, and other historical buildings. You can also taste Hungary's most famous red wine, Egri Bikavér (Bull's Blood of Eger).

In Eger, you step back in time, and it is definitely worth a visit, just about a 30-minute drive from the campsite.

Eger is one of the most beautiful cities in Hungary. In the old city center, you’ll find many old buildings from various centuries. The city has a heroic history with sieges and battles for Eger. The influence of various rulers can be seen throughout the city.

In the city center, you will find several old buildings within walking distance of each other: the castle, the basilica, the minaret, St. Anthony of Padua Church, and Dobó Square. You can leisurely wander through the streets, and once you've done that, relax at one of the squares, enjoying a snack and a drink on the terrace.

Eger is famous for its red wine, Egri Bikavér. In 1552, the city was surrounded by a large Turkish army. Under the leadership of István Dobó, the attacks were successfully repelled. A book has been published about this, Egri Csillagok (The Stars of Eger). The name of Eger's famous wine, Egri Bikavér, is derived from the story of this battle.

This red wine can be tasted in various places in the city or at Szépasszonyvölgy (the valley of the beautiful women).
