Fishing in Hungary
Many Hungarians fish for relaxation, but of course also to enjoy it with the whole family during a hearty dinner.
In Hungary, fishing for carp is very popular, but also catfish, European perch, trout, sturgeon, barbel, sunfish, and the Eastern European variant of the zander. Furthermore, you can find all the fish species that are also found in the waters of the Netherlands.
At Lake Tisza, the combination of varying depths, fast-flowing and still water creates a habitat for various fish species. Additionally, a lush world of plants and animals has developed. At Lake Tisza, there is a great chance of catching a giant catfish. Carp, pike, and perch are also abundant.
As of January 1, 2019, the rules regarding fishing permits in Hungary have changed. To be able to fish, a fisher registration is required. Part of the registration is the application for the Hungarian fishing card, which replaces the old paper fishing card. For this application, you must take a small test. You will receive 20 questions, after which you can apply for the fishing card. Don't forget to bring your Dutch permit/fishing pass as well.
These required permits can be purchased at many tourist information points and in larger cities at the MOHOSZ (angling information offices). Permits are available for both long periods and shorter periods, such as a day or a week.
