Stalactite caves
Hungary has several stalactite caves in different locations. The most famous place for this is Aggtelek National Park. It is about a 1 hour and 15 minute drive from our campsite in Gelej.
You can also visit the Szent István Cave. These are also stalactite caves, but smaller than those at Aggtelek National Park. The Szent István stalactite caves are about a 1-hour drive from our campsite in Gelej.
Aggtelek National Park
Aggtelek National Park is a large nature park in the north of Hungary, along the border with Slovakia. The park covers approximately 200 km².
Aggtelek National Park combines beautiful nature above ground with breathtaking stalactite caves underground.
Caves
There are 280 caves spread across the entire area. Each cave is different, both in size and the features of the cave. The caves are mostly made of limestone.
The stalactite caves are listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site.
Above ground
The above-ground terrain is also breathtaking and serves as a habitat for a variety of animal species. Some of the more promising sightings include the grey wolf, the Eurasian lynx, the red deer, and the wild boar. There are also many birds to admire, such as the Eastern imperial eagle, saker falcon, kingfisher, and many others.
Activities
There are many activities to do in Aggtelek National Park. These include cave tours in the stalactite caves (ranging from short to longer walks), various hiking trails above ground, bike tours through the park, horseback riding in the park, bird watching, and, of course, you can also explore on your own.

This cavity is a temporary source cave, formed by the karst water flowing down from the surface through the water wells from the area of Létrás-lápa and István-lápa, located on the eastern edge of the Great Plateau of the Old Bükk Mountains. The cave offers a unique sight with spectacular erosion shapes (such as mammoth teeth and mother-in-law's throat), along with beautiful stalactite formations, creating an unforgettable experience.
Activities
In the Szent István Cave, a guided tour is available. The tour lasts about 30 minutes. You can click the button below for the official website. There is also plenty to do outside the caves. The village of Lillafüred is within walking distance. There are several activities available there.
