The landscape of Hungary has been mainly shaped by the dry and warm climate that prevails there. As a result, Hungary's nature is characterized by steppes, which resemble the Asian landscape or the savannas of Africa. \nHungary was once a very forested country. In the lowlands, deforestation has sadly been almost complete, but in the mountainous regions, you can still find vast deciduous and coniferous forests, home to rare plants and animals.\n

The rare animal species of Hungary are mostly found in national parks and remote mountainous areas. Hungary is also a paradise for bird lovers. Here in the Hortob\u00e1gy National Park, very large numbers of birds can be spotted. You can see bee-eaters, hoopoes, cranes, and even pelicans here. \n
\n
When you take a walk around the borders of Gelej, you are likely to encounter a roe deer, a stork, and\/or various birds of prey. <\/p>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n

B\u00fckk National Park<\/h4>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n

The mountains of B\u00fckk National Park are perfect for guests who enjoy being active for a day. You can go hiking and cycling here. The mountain range can be seen from the campsite if you look towards the North. The mountains are located between the cities of Eger and Miskolc. If you drive for an hour from the campsite, you'll find yourself in the heart of the mountains. In less than a 30-minute drive, the hills begin, and there are charming villages to visit such as: Bog\u00e1cs, Hars\u00e1ny, and Cser\u00e9pv\u00e1ralja. These are perfect starting points for beautiful hikes in the hills. <\/p>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n

Lake Tisza<\/h4>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n

After Lake Balaton, Lake Tisza is the largest lake in Hungary. With its area of 127 km\u00b2, Lake Tisza is a wonder of nature. It lies in the great Hungarian plain, near the Hortob\u00e1gy National Park. Thousands of birds can be found here in the vast marshy area. The number of storks, for which many dozens of nesting opportunities have been created on electricity poles and lampposts in every Hungarian village, is also impressive. The town of Poroszl\u00f3 is about a 30-minute drive from the campsite and is the heart of Lake Tisza. Here you will also find the Tisza-Tavi \u00d6kocentrum, a tourist center where you can see and learn everything about Lake Tisza and the surrounding nature. <\/p>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n

Hortob\u00e1gy National Park<\/h4>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n

Hortob\u00e1gy National Park, also known as the Puszta (pronounced: Poesta), is a vast grassland with wide open views. In many places, you can easily see up to 70 km away. Hortob\u00e1gy National Park was the first national park in Hungary. In the town of Hortob\u00e1gy, there is a visitor center from which various activities can be booked, such as a safari across the Puszta and a train ride over the Puszta. The visitor center is about a 1 hour and 15 minute drive from the campsite in Gelej. <\/p>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n

M\u00e1tra Mountains<\/h4>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n

If you drive from Budapest to the campsite via the M3, you will pass by the M\u00e1tra Mountains. This mountain range contains the highest peaks in Hungary: K\u00e9kes (1014m) and Galya-tet\u0151 (964m).\n
\n
The highest point is marked by the television tower that has been built on top of the mountain. After just over an hour's drive from the campsite, you will be at the highest point of Hungary, K\u00e9kes.<\/p>\n
